Going from Blonde to Dark hair ( natural & bleached blonde)

Going from Blonde to Dark hair ( natural & bleached blonde)

28th Mar 2023

Below we look at how to dye light blonde and bleached hair with a dark Desert Shadow hair colour

(using Chocolate Shadow, Deep Chestnut Shadow or Indigo Shadow)

If you have light hair ( bleached or natural) and wish to use one of our dark hair colours, such as Chocolate, Deep Chestnut or Indigo Shadow you will need to first apply a red base colour to ensure you get good coverage.

Naturally blonde hair:

If you have naturally blonde or light coloured hair and wish to use Chocolate, Deep Chestnut or Indigo Shadow you will need to first apply a Red Shadow or Copper Shadow base first. See full directions at bottom section

Why?

Red creates a good solid base for the Darker shades to lay on, helps give an even and rich coverage and prevents your hair from taking on a bluish or green tone.

If you do not use a Red Shadow or Copper Shadow base, you will not get full colour coverage and you will be left with a blue tone or possibly a green on your hair strands.

**YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY THIS RED BASE TO YOUR REGROWTH EACH AND EVERY TIME YOU COLOUR YOU HAIR

Bleached blonde hair including Balayage:

If you have bleached hair and you colour is naturally dark you will only need to apply the Red Shadow or Copper Shadow base to the lightened/bleached sections of your hair. You may need to do this on the first and possibly second application of your dark colour. See full directions at bottom section

Why?

Red creates a good solid base for the Darker shades to lay on, helps give an even and rich coverage and prevents your hair from taking on a bluish or green tone.

If you do not use a Red Shadow or Copper Shadow base on the lightened sections of hair you will not get full colour coverage and you will be left with a blue tone or possibly a green on your hair strands.

*YOU WILL NEED TO APPLY THIS RED BASE ON THE FIRST AND SECOND COLOUR APPLICATION ONLY

What you will need :

1x Chocolate Shadow, Deep Chestnut Shadow or Indigo Shadow.

1x Copper Shadow or Red Shadow.

1x Conditioner.

Shower cap, tinting brush, comb.

How long will it take?

15 mins for mixing, approximately 2 to 4 hours for application & colour processing.

FIRST STEP - creating the red base

We recommend you use either the Copper Shadow or Red Shadow from our organic hair colour range.

  1. Mix the red colour as per instructions and apply to your hair. You only need to wait 10 mins for colour activation so, you mix and use the colour straight away.
  2. Apply the colour to the hair focusing on the light/bleached sections of your hair (you can apply to full length or regrowth only).
  3. You can watch our application tutorial here: https://www.desertshadow.com.au/complete-organic-hair-beauty-blog/how-to-apply-your-hair-colour-at-home/
  4. After application, cover your hair with a shower cap and leave to process for 1 to 2 hours.
  5. Rinse using water only, and towel dry your hair ready for your Dark colour application.
  6. You can read our article about washing out your hair colour here: https://www.desertshadow.com.au/complete-organic-hair-beauty-blog/washing-your-hair-colour-out/

NOTE: Your blonde/bleached sections of hair will be a vibrant copper red colour. Don't worry because this will be covered up when you apply your dark colour over the top.

TIP: did you mix too much of your red colour and have left overs? You can pop it in the freezer. It will last for a month or two in there and will only take 30mins to defrost.

You are now ready to apply the Chocolate, Deep Chestnut or Indigo Shadow. You can choose to do this straight away or you can do it within the next 24 to 48 hours

SECOND STEP - creating your final colour

Once you have applied your red base colour. You can now apply your Chocolate, Deep Chestnut or Indigo Shadow to create your final colour. Please ensure you do this within the first 48 hours of applying your red base colour.

  1. Mix the Chocolate, Deep Chestnut or Indigo Shadow as per instructions. You will choose the NON GREY COVERAGE METHOD.
  2. Apply the colour to your full length of hair or roots only (if you don't need full length coverage). Be sure to cover all sections where you applied the red base.
  3. You can watch our application tutorial here: https://www.desertshadow.com.au/complete-organic-hair-beauty-blog/how-to-apply-your-hair-colour-at-home/
  4. After application, cover your hair with a shower cap and leave to process for 2 to 4 hours.
  5. Rinse using conditioner only, dry and style as usual.
  6. Your can read our article about washing out your hair colour here: https://www.desertshadow.com.au/complete-organic-hair-beauty-blog/washing-your-hair-colour-out/

TIP: did you mix too much and now you still have leftovers? Unfortunately the Chocolate, Deep Chestnut and Indigo Shadow can not be saved once mixed. So best to try and estimate how much you will need. The first time using it you can mix the whole pack and by seeing whats left over you will know roughly how much you will need for next time. You could also mix half and then if you need more mix more as you go along - I just find it easier not to have to stop and mix halfway through application.

After 72 hours the final colour result will be seen. Please allow time for the colour to settle as the process keeps working even after the paste is washed out of the hair.

** read and follow instructions provided in your hair colour product.
